German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently revisited her scientific roots when she toured the innovative Junior Uni program in Wuppertal, Germany and saw, firsthand, how PPG’s investment in education is helping to prepare the next generation of scientists, researchers and other technical specialists. The former doctoral physicist met with several students during her tour, conducting experiments and engaging students in dynamic discussions. She also applauded Junior Uni and its partners, including PPG, for creating seminars targeted to girls that will help them develop their interest in technical fields.

“I am delighted to see so many girls here,” she said. “I hope that over the years they will not forget how great the natural sciences are.”

Since 2016, PPG has awarded more than $90,000 in community engagement grants to Junior Uni. This has helped the organization provide year-round and after-school science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming to students aged four to 20, including hands-on math and robotics seminars, freestyle physics courses, and workshops that help young students understand the science behind colors and light. PPG employees have also donated their time to help with student projects.

“Wuppertal Junior Uni does a remarkable job when it comes to introducing students to STEM and nurturing their interest in these important fields,” said Heiko Stuhl, plant manager of PPG’s automotive OEM coatings site in Wuppertal, and one of the guests who accompanied Chancellor Merkel on the tour. “We are proud to be part of the Junior Uni journey and to support the important development of young talents."

German Prime Minister Armin Laschet, Wuppertal Lord Mayor Andreas Mucke, and other business and civic leaders also joined Chancellor Merkel for the visit.
