As parents, we’re always looking for new ways to get our children away from screens, and doing something creative – especially when the weather or the AQI means they’re stuck inside. Booster Bricks is now bringing its Lego subscription service to China, and promises to offer a new way for parents to sit down and spend some quality time with their kids.

Booster Bricks are not affiliated with the official Lego company, but say they only use genuine Lego pieces. Their source is Replay Bricks, which recovers used pieces and cleans them for reuse. Since Lego bricks, while famously indestructible, also take millions of years to degrade, this is certainly a better destination for them than landfill!
The monthly subscription package comes with a story book, linking
up four building challenges: the main “Premier” build, a
minifigure, a blindfold challenge, and a smaller “microbuild”
challenge. Members can upload their builds to the Booster Bricks
Facebook page, and the best are printed in the monthly magazine
and win prizes.
Pieces are randomly selected, so some of the builds require
considerable creativity; and in the case of the minifigure, some
imagination, if the parts don’t happen to match what you’re
supposed to build. Booster Bricks have come in for some criticism
from serious Lego collectors, who question whether quality
control is adequate and the bricks provided offer value for
money.
However if your kids like to receive a fun package every month,
and you’re looking for an activity you can share with them on
those stuck-indoors days, then Booster Bricks are certainly
bringing something new to Beijing. Because of the limited supply
of reused bricks, there’s an online test to join the waiting list
for membership, so they certainly seem to be popular. Find out
